Panama Esmeralda 2012 Mario San Jose

This Serious Select coffee will be roasted and shipped on
Tuesday 12/18 and Fridays 12/21 and 12/28 subject to availability.

This year our top pick from Panama's awesome Hacienda Esmeralda was from their Mario San Jose plot. We were successful bidders at the privately held auction attended by a rarified group of coffee roasters from all corners of the globe. Each of was there to procure some amount of this small production, elite and highly awarded coffee. Mario San Jose was harvested in March and named after the patron saint of the province where this coffee is grown, Chiriqui. Most of the award winning Esmeralda coffees originate from the 'Mario' plots at elevations ranging from is 1500 to 1650 meters.

What can you say about Hacienda La Esmeralda that hasn't already been said? Their award winning geisha varietal has won so many competitions with an awesome combination of fruit and floral flavors, sometimes bursting with them, that nearly every accolade has been spoken. We have been supporters of Hacienda Esmeralda for years and are well familiar with their various plots of land. Esmeralda has several different tracts of land and they have learned that the geisha varietal produces varying flavor results depending where on their property they grow it. Even small variations in elevation and soil structure seem to make significant changes to the cup profile. Mario San Jose is an excellent example of what Esmeralda can achieve given what seems to be ideal elevation and soil conditions.

Coffee arrives at our warehouse unroasted, in sealed vacuum packages, which are opened as needed.

Award night a few years back in Panama with The Peterson's of Hacienda La Esmeralda.
Clockwise: Bob Williams, Price, Rachel and Susan Peterson,
Barry Levine, Daniel Peterson.

Cup Characteristics: A balanced and sweet cup, notes of jasmine, mandarin oranges, chocolate, blackberry jam, sugar cane. Shows chocolate and lemon along with blackberry and apricot. Brisk, citric acidity. Mouthfeel is smooth, well rounded. Orange background flavors. Jasmine and heady scents abound. A bouquet that presents itself immediately in ground, then enlivened during brewing. The coffee has both power and delicacy. You know those flavors and scents are present, yet none of the overpower you or one another, presenting a harmonious unity.

NOTE: The this coffee is available in a full or half pound.
