This item includes free shipping in the 48 contiguous US states.
Throughout most of the year Willoughby's offers special, limited edition coffees we call Serious Select. We typically roast these coffees once a week, usually on Tuesdays. During this holiday season we are presenting four of our very best selling Serious Select coffees in an attractive gift box along with your personal message should you choose to include one. We realize these coffees are more expensive than many of our ongoing offerings but this is due in part to their scarcity and to the prices we must pay to acquire them on behalf of our clientele.
Included in the sampler are four half pounds, each in foil packaging with one way valves. Each Serious Select sampler is roasted to order and shipped at the peak of freshness. We will roast these coffees on each Tuesday through December and ship the very same day.
We can supply your gift list of one or many.
- Panama Esmeralda Boquete Geisha - Each year for the past several years, Hacienda Esmeralda has held a private auction of their prized Geisha varietal, each Esmeralda Special lot coming from a specific plot of land on their farm. Altogether there is not much coffee, only about 20,000 pounds, which must fill a big demand from all corners of the world (this may sound like a lot but is only half of one shipping container). Competition for the coffee is fierce and prices go very high. By the time the coffee reaches roasters around the world it is not uncommon for it to sell for more than $100 per pound or $5 to $7 when sold by the cup. Fortunately, this year Esmeralda has released their "second coffee", the 100% Geisha Esmeralda Boquete. As in the wine world where the second wine of the very top chateaux are fabulous wines in their own right, still costly but a relative bargain. Lafite-Rothschild has its Lafite Rothschild Carruades de Lafite; Chateau Latour its Les Forts de Latour. These wines would be great in anyone's book, but they are withheld, often for a tiny detail, from being in the rarified top lot. The same holds true for Esmeralda Boquete Geisha. This is a wonderful coffee, exhibiting much of the same lovely jasmine, floral and lemony tones witnessed in the auction lots but at less than half the price.
- Jamaica Blue Mountain, Juniper Peak Microlot - Here's something you won't see everyday - a micro-lot from the Blue Mountain's Clifton Mount Estate called Juniper Peak. Thanks to our direct relationship with Jason and Richard Sharp of Clifton Mount they have sent us very special coffee that has not been available to the US market - until now. Juniper Peak is a micro-lot from the highest areas of the Clifton Mount Coffee estate in Jamaica Blue Mountain. At about 4300 feet above sea level, the Juniper Peak area is made up of 15 acres of land which is surrounded by Juniper Cedar trees that shade the coffee plants and give the plot of farm it's name. Of the entire crop, Juniper Peak comprises a mere 2% of the coffee. The owners of the farm then meticulously cup the coffee to determine what represents the best grade for micro-lot classification. The cup, as described by the farm owners, is wonderfully aromatic, superbly balanced, with rich hints of chocolate and a sublime sweet lingering finish. The unroasted beans are a vibrant blue color indicative of the high quality and extreme care taken to harvest such a special coffee.Jamaica Blue Mountain is an appellation, much like the French have done with their prized wine regions. In order to be called Jamaica Blue Mountain the coffee must come from the parishes of Portland, St Andrew, St. Mary or St Thomas which are in eastern part of the island. Jamaica's Blue Mountain coffee has long held a reputation as being one of the world's best coffees and this particular lot showcases just how special it is.
- Panama Don Julian Pacamara - We unabashedly enjoy this coffee and consider it one of the best out there. After having tasted it over the course of at least seven years we have been able to secure it for our customers at an affordable price. It was the #1 ranking coffee at this year's Best of Panama competition in the Traditional category. This is perhaps one of the best examples of the Pacamara varietal we have ever experienced. While this is a big, sturdy cup filled with layers of dark plum, prune and fig followed by a long finish, it is not overbearing nor something you will tire of quickly. The coffee fetched $25.25 per pound at auction and should sell for three times that after import and roasting. We acquired ours directly in advance of the auction taking all that was available. Grown at high altitude on Horqueta Mountain in Boquete, Panama we think you will enjoy this privately acquired lot as much as we do. Chocolate and floral aromatics. Exotic, big prune, raisin, fig, plum flavors with a hint of portabello. Big, beefy Pacamara with dark fruit dominance. Hickory background notes and cedar. Lots of body; brooding, long finish. Big, sturdy and structured. A real achievement.
- Costa Rica Santa Lucia, Helsar Organico - This serious select favorite is grown and processed by the partnership of Ricardo Perez Barrantes and the brothers Marvin and Felipe Rodriguez. The coffee is from the Santa Lucia organic farm that is adjacent to the mill. Both their West Valley farm and their mill are exemplary of sustainable practices. Their organic coffee is grown on their own multiply certified farm from a mixture of Caturra, Catuai and Villalobos varietals. The Santa Lucia is semi washed, meaning that just the smallest amount of mucillage is left to dry on the husk; this imparts a slight fruitiness once the coffee has been fully dried and milled. This is a multiple award winning organic farm and mill including Cup of Excellence. Their harvest and processing methods are precise and make for a great cup. Soft, round with vanilla overtones. Exotic, dry aroma of dark fruit, plummy. Very pleasant overall and balanced.
